Avowed has taken the RPG world by storm, garnering critical acclaim and praise from fans thanks to its detailed open areas, stunning visuals, and incredible combat. Of course, with a good game comes the urge to find more like it, and fortunately, there are quite a lot like Avowed. From obvious inspirations to games set within the same universe, fans of Avowed or just fantasy RPGs in general have a lot to look forward to.
While not every game will live up to Avowed’s impressive reviews, many of them offer sprawling worlds to explore and epic journeys to embark upon. Naturally, many of these are AAA titles from the very best developers, but quite a few fall into the AA and indie categories, making for more experimental and often better experiences. Those who are after more of Avowed’s brilliance should look no further than these amazing games.

Dread Delusion (Lovely Hellplace)
Morrowind Made By Indie Devs
Some of the titles closest to Avowed are also the best Scrolls-like games, ones that attempt to replicate the immersive RPG experience that Bethesda and Obsidian Entertainment have perfected. One of the best of these is the indie open-world RPG, Dread Delusion from Lovely Hellplace. It is a spiritual successor to Morrowind, taking inspiration from its level of difficulty, focus on deep RPG mechanics, and surreal environments.
Much like Avowed, there’s a lot of variety when it comes to combat, as well as a world teeming with emergent moments and interesting quests. Dread Delusion quickly became a fan-favorite, garnering incredible reviews thanks to its impeccable encapsulation of the Elder Scrolls formula that runs so deeply in Avowed’s DNA. For those looking for a more experimental RPG, Dread Delusion is the perfect choice.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
One Of The Greatest RPGs Ever Made
No list of great RPG games like Avowed would be complete without a mention of Baldur’s Gate 3, the game that has quickly cemented itself – likely permanently – at the top of every best RPGs of all-time list. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers an unprecedented level of freedom, allowing players to approach each mission in whatever way they please, within limits, of course.
This can lead to all manner of hilarious and somber moments that players are best rolling with, rather than save-scumming. Much like Avowed, Baldur’s Gate 3 is also a deeply lore-driven experience, packed full of interesting worldbuilding, great companions and characters with their own stories to tell, and phenomenal side quests that will stick with players as much as the main story.
8
Greedfall (Spiders)
Better Than Bioware
Greedfall is Spiders’ best RPG yet, a phenomenal Bioware-inspired game set in a colonial fantasy world ravaged by a mysterious illness killing the masses. The player is sent to a new land to discover a cure, only to become embroiled in the politics of rival factions and the struggles of the indigenous peoples. It’s a brilliant game, one with souls-lite combat that would go on to inspire Spiders’ next game, Steelrising, a plethora of moral choices that greatly affect the ending and fascinating companions.
Much like Avowed, there’s a huge emphasis on companions and their relationship to the player, as well as a focus on the atrocities of colonization. Greedfall’s world is far more mature and gritty than Avowed’s, one that still feels fantastical and otherworldly, but will nevertheless appeal to those looking for a break from the colorful world of Eora.

Dragon Age: Inquisition (Bioware)
It Perfects The Party Banter
Many may instinctively think of Dragon Age: The Veilguard when choosing their next game to play after Avowed. However, The Veilguard’s poor review scores and lack of quality compared to previous Dragon Age games make it a poorer choice, even if it’s more contemporary. The better option, especially for those looking for a more modern and colorful fantasy game, is Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Featuring a similar level of party banter, colorful open environments with a range of biomes, and a sprawling narrative with rich worldbuilding as Avowed, Dragon Age: Inquisition is the closest to Obsidian Entertainment’s latest RPG. It’s full of meaningful choices, exciting combat encounters, and a lot of side content, most of which is worth doing. Dragon Age: Inquisition is a great choice for those looking to jump into another lengthy RPG like Avowed.
6
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (Big Huge Games)
A Massive High-Fantasy Adventure
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an extremely colorful, MMO-inspired fantasy RPG with huge names behind its design, including Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, Elder Scrolls developer, Ken Rolston, and GoldenEye, Banjo Kazooe, and Perfect Dark composer Grant Kirkhope. Featuring a brightly colored fantasy world akin to World of Warcraft’s Azeroth, players explore vast areas, complete a range of interconnected quests, collect powerful loot, and fight challenging bosses.
Kingdoms of Amalur was remastered and rereleased as Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. It also received a brand-new DLC called Fatesworn, which adds a lot of new content to the base experience.
It’s a very traditional RPG, one that embraces tradition in the best way possible. With a bigger emphasis on combat, Kingdoms of Amalur can often feel like God of War. Fans of Avowed’s brightly colored world and fantastic open area structure will love Kingdom of Amalur a lot. It is the perfect choice for those looking for a lightweight RPG designed with a lot of love and passion.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (Warhorse Studios)
A Phenomenally Immersive RPG
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has quickly become everyone’s favorite RPG thanks to its deeply immersive mechanics, sprawling world, fantastic story, and ridiculous attention to detail. There are really no other games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 as it’s in a league of its own when it comes to just how much detail it puts into its gameplay mechanics.
This is what makes it the perfect experience to play after Avowed, as it builds upon a lot of the RPG foundations set by Avowed and similar games. For those who loved Avowed’s most immersive mechanics, but wanted something more, then Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the optimal choice. Of course, there’s also the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance game to play first, for those who fancy sinking upwards of 200 hours into this historical RPG.
4
Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon (Questline)
A Darker & More Mature Skyrim
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an indie open-world RPG set within the Tainted Grail universe, a gritty and dark reimagining of Arthurian legends. Offering a non-linear sandbox for players to explore, The Fall of Avalon features challenging first-person fantasy combat, a lot of secrets to uncover, plenty of side quests to complete, and so much more.
It is currently in Early Access, but the developers are regularly putting out updates to flesh out the game’s current systems and add a lot more content. Fall of Avalon is a great choice for those looking for an exciting first-person fantasy RPG as their next game after Avowed, even in its current state, especially thanks to the fact that it draws clear inspiration from Skyrim and similar open-world fantasy RPGs.
The Game Everyone Compares Avowed To
Of course, much like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim deserves a mention, if only thanks to its obvious influence on Avowed. In many ways, Avowed feels like the game Obsidian Entertainment would have made had it continued developing spin-offs of Bethesda’s popular IP, as it had with Fallout: New Vegas. While Avowed is better than Bethesda’s best, it’s still worth going back to see the game that everyone is comparing it to.
Skyrim is also just a fantastic fantasy RPG, one with an incredible open world that still largely holds up today. There’s a lot about it that hasn’t aged as well thanks to the likes of Kingdom Come: Deliverance and Baldur’s Gate showing it up, but Skyrim is still an incredibly enjoyable romp worth revisiting. Those who’ve already played and beaten Skyrim many times can always head back and try some of its best mods to freshen things up.
2
The Outer Worlds (Obsidian Entertainment)
The Sci-Fi Version Of Avowed
Perhaps the closest game in structure and style to Avowed is Obsidian Entertainment’s other first-person RPG, The Outer Worlds. While it isn’t a fantasy game, instead being a satirical sci-fi adventure, it shares a lot of the same gameplay mechanics and stylings. The Outer Worlds is an open area game, much like Avowed, with its first being its strongest.
It also features a fascinating cast of lovable companions with their own moral compasses, stories, and quirky banter. A lot of what makes Avowed great can be found in The Outer Worlds, which is what makes it the best game to play afterward. It is also the perfect time to play it, as the hugely-anticipated Outer Worlds sequel is set to release in 2025, just a few months after Avowed.

Pillars Of Eternity (Obsidian Entertainment)
The Precursor To Avowed
Those who love Avowed absolutely need to play Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment’s phenomenal CRPG. While hardcore fans will likely already know the connection between the two games, some may not realize that Avowed is actually set within the same world as Pillars of Eternity. In fact, a lot of the lore and worldbuilding in Avowed is expanding on events that occurred within Pillars of Eternity and its sequel, Deadfire.

Avowed Not Letting You Equip Your Companions Is A Great Move
Avowed doesn’t let you give gear to your companions. While this initially might seem like a downside, it serves to make gameplay run smoother.
Pillars of Eternity is also just a great game, even outside its connections to Avowed. It’s one of the best CRPGs available, offering a robust adventure full of Obsidian’s amazing writing and characters. Those looking for a game similar to Avowed should look no further than Pillars of Eternity, the game that literally started it all.
